How to hold a flight reservation for free
If your consulate wants a reservation it can verify, you usually don't need to pay a third party. Here are the legitimate ways to get one.
1. The US 24-hour rule
US Department of Transportation rules cover flights to, from, or within the United States that are booked directly with the airline at least 7 days before departure. The airline must do one of two things:
- hold the reservation at the quoted fare for 24 hours without payment, or
- let you cancel within 24 hours for a full refund.
Most airlines choose free cancellation, so you pay and then get your money back if you cancel in time. A few offer a true unpaid hold. The rule applies only to bookings made directly with the airline, and only on US-touching routes.
2. Airline hold options
Some airlines outside the US let you "hold" or "lock" a fare for a day or more, either free or for a small fee. Look for "hold booking", "fare lock", or "pay later" when you book on the airline's own website.
3. Refundable or flexible fares
A fully refundable ticket is a real booking you can cancel if the visa is refused. It costs more up front, so read the refund conditions, deadlines, and any fees first.
Timing tips
- Hold close to your appointment. A 24-hour hold is gone before most visas are processed. Many consulates accept an itinerary plan, so use holds only when a verifiable reservation is explicitly required.
- Keep your airline's own confirmation email. That's the real proof. A reformatted "ticket" isn't.
- Be upfront. In your cover letter, say that flights will be purchased once the visa is granted.
